Keeping WordPress updated is essential for **security, stability, and access to new features**. While automatic updates are available, sometimes you may need to update WordPress manually—for example, if automatic updates fail or if you want more control. On **ruachost.com**, you can update WordPress manually through the dashboard or by replacing files via FTP.

## Why Update WordPress?

- **Security** → Updates patch vulnerabilities.
- **Stability** → Bug fixes improve performance.
- **Features** → Gain access to the latest WordPress tools and enhancements.

## Steps to Update WordPress Manually

### Method 1: Update via Dashboard

1. **Log in to WordPress** as an administrator.
2. In the left sidebar, click **Dashboard → Updates**.
3. If a new version is available, click **Update Now**.
4. WordPress will automatically replace core files with the latest version.

### Method 2: Update via FTP (Manual File Replacement)

1. Download the latest WordPress version from wordpress.org.
2. Extract the ZIP file on your computer.
3. Connect to your site using **FTP** or **File Manager** in cPanel.
4. Navigate to your WordPress root directory.
5. Upload and overwrite the following files/folders from the new package:

   - `wp-admin`
   - `wp-includes`
   - Root files (like `index.php`, `wp-settings.php`)
6. Do **not** overwrite the `wp-content` folder (to preserve themes and plugins).
7. Once uploaded, log in to WordPress → If required, WordPress will prompt you to run the **database update**.

### Method 3: Enable Automatic Updates (Optional)

- In **Dashboard → Updates**, click **Switch to automatic updates**.
- Alternatively, configure automatic updates using **WP-CLI** or cron jobs.

## Important Notes

- Always **back up your site** (files + database) before updating.
- Test updates on a staging site if possible.
- Ensure plugins and themes are compatible with the new WordPress version.
