Speeding up slow Drupal administration pages
Sometimes, Drupal’s administration interface may load very slowly. This issue is often caused by the way Drupal checks for updates. On ruachost.com, you can resolve this by disabling certain modules or automating updates with Drush.
Problem
Section titled “Problem”- When loading administration pages, Drupal automatically checks several URLs for system updates.
- If one of these URLs is unavailable, Drupal waits for the connection to time out.
- During this waiting period, administration pages load slowly.
Workarounds
Section titled “Workarounds”Option 1: Disable Update Modules
Section titled “Option 1: Disable Update Modules”- Drupal 6 → Disable the Update status module.
- Drupal 7 → Disable the Update manager module.
- Log in to Drupal as an administrator.
- Navigate to Modules.
- Locate the relevant update module.
- Uncheck the Enabled box.
- Click Save configuration.
Option 2: Use Drush with Cron
Section titled “Option 2: Use Drush with Cron”- Instead of relying on the admin interface, automate updates with Drush.
- Configure a cron job to run update checks regularly.
- This ensures your site stays secure without slowing down the admin interface.
Important Notes
Section titled “Important Notes”- Disabling update modules is only a workaround.
- You should still check for Drupal updates manually or automate them with Drush.
- Keeping Drupal core and modules updated is critical for site security.
