Stopping WordPress from generating different image sizes without a plugin

By default, WordPress automatically generates multiple versions of an image (thumbnail, medium, large) whenever you upload one. While this helps with responsive design, it can consume storage space unnecessarily. On ruachost.com, you can stop WordPress from generating extra image sizes directly from the dashboard, no plugin required.

  • Saves disk space on your hosting account.
  • Prevents clutter in the Media Library.
  • Useful if you already optimize images manually.
  • Reduces server processing during uploads.
  1. Log in to WordPress with an administrator account.

  2. In the dashboard, go to Settings → Media.

  3. In the Media Settings section, set the width and height to 0 (zero) for the following:

  4. Click Save Changes.

✅ WordPress will no longer generate additional image sizes when you upload new images.

  • This change only affects new uploads. Previously generated sizes will remain in your Media Library.
  • If you want to remove old image sizes, use the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin or manually delete them.
  • Some themes and plugins may rely on specific image sizes, test thoroughly before disabling.
