New Outlook for Windows not connecting

The new Outlook for Windows (which replaces the old Mail and Calendar apps) handles IMAP accounts differently from classic Outlook. It connects through Microsoft’s cloud, which can cause some setup problems.

  1. In new Outlook, go to Settings → Accounts → Email accounts → Add account.
  2. Enter your full email address and click Continue.
  3. If Outlook can’t find your settings, or offers the wrong type, choose IMAP and enter the settings manually:
  4. Use your full email address as the username for both incoming and outgoing servers, and turn on SSL.

“We couldn’t sign in” or the password is rejected Check the password in webmail first. If webmail works, re-enter it in Outlook, making sure there’s no space at the end.

Certificate or security warning Use the secure server name shown in cPanel’s Connect Devices instead of mail.yourdomain.com. See Email settings for apps and devices.

Account added, but mail doesn’t sync New Outlook syncs IMAP accounts through Microsoft’s servers, which can be blocked if your account has IP restrictions (Business Email) or after many failed logins. Remove the account and add it again. If you use Business Email IP restrictions, ask your administrator.

Calendar and contacts don’t appear (Business Email) IMAP only syncs email. For calendar and contacts, use the Exchange ActiveSync account type. See Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync.

You can switch back to classic Outlook with the toggle at the top right of the new app, or use another app such as Thunderbird. Classic Outlook setup: Setting up webmail with Outlook.
