Fixing All-in-One WP Migration import and export problems
All-in-One WP Migration is a popular plugin for moving WordPress sites. Large sites often hit limits or time-outs. Here’s how to fix the common problems.
Export problems (on your old host)
Section titled “Export problems (on your old host)”“Unable to export” or the export stops
Section titled ““Unable to export” or the export stops”- Not enough disk space on the old host. The export file is created on the server first. Free up space, or exclude large items.
- Time-outs or memory limits on the old host. Try again at a quieter time.
- A plugin conflicts. Temporarily deactivate security and caching plugins, then export again.
Make the export smaller
Section titled “Make the export smaller”Under Advanced options when exporting, you can tick:
- Do not export spam comments and post revisions
- Do not export cache files
- Do not export media library (copy
wp-content/uploadsseparately with FTP instead)
Large backup folders from other plugins, such as wp-content/updraft or wp-content/ai1wm-backups, also make exports huge. Delete old backups first.
Import problems (on Ruachost)
Section titled “Import problems (on Ruachost)”“Maximum upload file size” is too small
Section titled ““Maximum upload file size” is too small”The free plugin may show a low limit. On Ruachost hosting, PHP allows uploads up to 512 MB by default, and you can raise it to 2 GB in cPanel under Select PHP Version → Options: set upload_max_filesize and post_max_size. See Changing your PHP version and settings.
For files larger than your browser upload allows:
- Upload the
.wpressfile with FTP or File Manager towp-content/ai1wm-backups/on the new site. - In WordPress, go to All-in-One WP Migration → Backups. Your file appears in the list.
- Click the file’s menu and choose Restore.
The import is stuck at a percentage
Section titled “The import is stuck at a percentage”- Wait a few minutes: large sites take a while.
- Reload the page and try again, using the Backups method above, which avoids browser upload time-outs.
- Check that your account has enough free disk space: you need roughly three times the size of the
.wpressfile during the import.
After the import
Section titled “After the import”- Log in with the old site’s username and password: they’re imported too.
- Go to Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes twice.
- Clear your caches. See Clearing your cache.
