Adding an SRV record to a domain

SRV (Service) records are special DNS entries that define how a domain handles specific services. They are often required when configuring applications such as SIP (VoIP), Microsoft Office 365, or other third-party services that rely on service discovery.

An SRV record specifies:

  • Service – the symbolic name of the service (e.g., _sip).
  • Protocol – the transport protocol (e.g., _tcp or _udp).
  • Priority – which server to contact first if multiple are available.
  • Weight – load balancing between servers of the same priority.
  • Port – the port number the service uses.
  • Target – the hostname of the server providing the service.

Example format: _service.protocol.domain.com
