Disabling plugins in Joomla

Sometimes you may need to disable a Joomla plugin to troubleshoot issues or because a plugin is incompatible with your installation. On ruachost.com, plugins can be disabled either through the Joomla administration interface or directly via the database if you cannot log in.

  • Troubleshoot application problems caused by faulty or incompatible plugins.
  • Prevent conflicts between extensions.
  • Temporarily stop a plugin without uninstalling it.

Method 1: Using the Administration Interface

Section titled “Method 1: Using the Administration Interface”
  1. Log in to your Joomla site as the administrator.

  2. On the top menu bar, click Extensions → Plugin Manager.

  3. Enabled plugins display a green checkmark in the Status column. Disabled plugins display a red X.

  4. Locate the plugin you want to disable.

  5. Click the green checkmark icon to disable it.

    • The icon will change to a red X.
  6. To disable multiple plugins at once:

    • Select the Check All box.
    • Click Disable.

If you cannot log in to the Joomla administration interface, you can disable plugins directly in the database:

  1. Log in to cPanel.

  2. In the Databases section, click phpMyAdmin.

  3. In the left pane, select your Joomla database.

    • If installed via Softaculous, the database name is usually username_joomXXX.
  4. Click the jos_extensions table.

  5. In the name column, locate the plugin you want to disable.

  6. In the same row, double‑click the value in the enabled column.

    • 1 = enabled
    • 0 = disabled
  7. Change the value to 0 and press Enter.

  8. phpMyAdmin will confirm with “1 row affected.”

  9. To re‑enable the plugin, change the value back to 1.

  • Always back up your site and database before making changes.
  • Disabling plugins does not delete them; you can re‑enable at any time.
  • Use the database method only if you cannot access the Joomla admin panel.
